Liposuction for Body Contouring

Dr. Ann Letourneau is a skilled and compassionate surgeon whose aim is to improve the appearance of her patients through cosmetic procedures. Board certified with more than 20 years of experience, Dr. Letourneau offers liposuction to improve the contours of the body. Liposuction is a safe and popular procedure performed mainly to tone the thighs, hips, abdomen, and upper arms—areas that are often difficult to tone through diet and exercise alone. Fat cells are suctioned out of the body with a cannula, a small tube inserted through an incision. If you are considering liposuction, contact Dr. Letourneau to schedule a consultation.

Suitable candidates for liposuction include:

Liposuction is often safely combined with other cosmetic procedures. Different parts of the body can be treated with liposuction on the same day, although excessive amounts of liposuction can lead to dents and lumps in the areas treated.

Types of Liposuction

There are a variety of liposuction techniques. Dr. Letourneau will help you to determine which is right for you.

Tumescent

In tumescent liposuction, a solution of anesthetics is pumped into the target area. The cannula suctions the fat cells out of the target area. The use of a local anesthetic helps prevent fluid and blood loss.

Super-wet

Super-wet liposuction requires general anesthetic. The solution used is equal to the amount of fat to be removed. Once the solution is injected, the cannula is used to remove the fat.

Power Assisted (PAL)

In PAL, the cannula moves back and forth at a rapid pace to remove fat from the target area. This method of suction reduces the amount of pain and bruising that can occur during the recovery process.

Ultrasound Assisted (UAL)

UAL is a more precise procedure that can be used to treat smaller areas. Commonly performed as a secondary procedure, it uses ultrasonic waves to liquefy fat cells.

LipoSelection®

LipoSelection® uses ultrasonic waves to liquefy fat cells while leaving the surrounding tissue undisturbed.

The Procedure

After the local and general anesthetic are administered, Dr. Letourneau makes several small incisions in the target area and inserts the cannula to remove the desired amount of fat. Dr. Letourneau either closes the incisions or leaves them open to reduce bruising and allow the remaining fluid to drain. After the procedure, the patient is required to wear a compression garment to aid in the healing process.

Side Effects

Minor side effects include swelling and bruising, which typically fade as the body heals.

Although generally safe, there are complications associated with the procedure. Minor complications can include:

More serious, and extremely rare, complications include:

Liposuction is a viable option for patients who are healthy, but have one or more areas of stubborn body fat that are unresponsive to diet and exercise. To learn more about this procedure, schedule a consultation with Dr. Letourneau to discuss your surgical options.
